![]() They'd still be writing songs regardless of whether they had any success at all in doing it.īut the real reason most people write songs is they have the same dream everyone else has.they want to be on stage singing an amazing song that everyone loves. They'd be doing it if the played in local and regional clubs in their area like me, or they're playing in sold out stadiums. For a lot of people, that's just what they do. That's just the way the game is played, so a songwriter would definitely want to keep it if he/she could.īut, that's not what really drives most people to write songs. So if you're trying to "sell" a song to be a big star, chances are you're going to have to give up someone of your songwriting credit/publishing. Now, once the song is finished, Paul probably realized it's a fantastic song, but he doesn't sing it all that well, who can I get this to any maybe they can make a hit out of it?Īnd, true, the songwriter is the person who gets paid, but there are performance dollars as well, and, if you want to work with huge stars, often times they want a piece of the song or they won't record it. Unless Rod Stewart's camp specifically asked Paul to write them a song (and I'd be surprised they did), I highly, highly doubt Paul Stanley picked up a guitar and said, "I think I will write a song for Rod Stewart." Once it's done, you figure out what to do with it. He gives them away because he knows he can't make them into hits with his voice.Ĭlick to expand.I don't know anyone who starts writing a song and says "I think I will write this one for Rod Stewart." You write a song. Mike Campbell has written a ton of great songs. Tom knew it was a hit, but also knew it wasn't right for him. Mike Campbell tried to get Tom Petty to sing Boys of Summer. Songs are given away because the person who wrote them knows they can't make them as good as someone else can. But I guarantee you, if I felt I sang it better, no freaking way was I going to give them away, and neither would Paul, or anyone else who has had success as a songwriter. Two of my very favorite songs I've ever written I gave away because another vocalist sang it better than me. Paul gave it to Peter because he felt he'd sing the song best. Paul didn't give it to Peter because he thought he should be giving Peter songs because he had a hit with the last one. If you read about the Band, they often had multiple members try to sing each song to see who sang it the best. If Peter is such a great singer, and "his voice" resonated with so many people, why did he never have another hit again? It's why Ezrin had Peter sing Beth in the first place. ![]() Do you think Paul Stanley wants to write songs to make someone else wealthy and a star? I can assure you, he doesn't.Ī songwriter, at least one who is honest with themselves, will look at each song individually and try to place it with the voice that best seems to fit.
